What Nobody Tells You About Eloping

The big decisions are the easy part. It's the small, unglamorous details that quietly make a mountain day perfect — the ones no checklist mentions. Here are the ones we learned the hard way.

Comfort beats everything

Pack a second pair of shoes for the walk, hand warmers, water and a snack. Cold, blistered or hungry always shows in the photos — and in how the day feels.

Protect the moment

Write your vows in advance and bring a printed copy — screens die in the cold. Tell no one the exact spot, silence your phones, and leave buffer time so nothing feels rushed.

The practical things nobody mentions

Carry a little cash: some toll roads and car parks — the Tre Cime road, Braies parking — are smoother paid in cash, and mountain-hut kitchens sometimes are too. Check the last cable-car descent before you commit to sunset, remember Braies closes to traffic from about 10:00 in summer, and pack a warm layer even in August — a summit at dawn is cold. And don't fear a grey forecast: rain can be the best thing that happens, as this rainy Braies morning shows.

The small print that saves you money

A few early decisions cut the cost. Book the rifugio and, if you're marrying legally in Austria, the registrar months ahead — both are limited in summer. The off-season (late May, October) is cheaper, quieter and often more beautiful, with golden larches and dusted peaks. And you rarely need both a toll road and a cable car on the same day — picking one keeps the budget and the timeline simple. We map all of it in how to plan your elopement.

The one thing to remember

It's your day, not a photo shoot. The best images come when you forget we're there and simply be together — we plan the rest around that.

Good to know

  • Print your vows — screens fail in the cold.
  • Pack snacks, water and warm layers.
  • Leave buffer time so nothing feels rushed.
